Zodiac sign dates: find your Sun sign
Zodiac sign dates divide the year into twelve approximate Sun-sign ranges. Use the calendar below to find a likely tropical Sun sign. If your birthday falls near the start or end of a range, the year, exact time and time zone can change the answer.

What are the dates for each zodiac sign?
The table lists conventional approximate dates, ordered from Aries to Pisces. These date ranges are a useful first lookup; they are not a substitute for calculating the Sun’s position at the exact moment of a boundary birthday.
| Sign | Dates | Element | Modality |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aries | Mar 21 – Apr 19 | Fire | Cardinal |
| Taurus | Apr 20 – May 20 | Earth | Fixed |
| Gemini | May 21 – Jun 20 | Air | Mutable |
| Cancer | Jun 21 – Jul 22 | Water | Cardinal |
| Leo | Jul 23 – Aug 22 | Fire | Fixed |
| Virgo | Aug 23 – Sep 22 | Earth | Mutable |
| Libra | Sep 23 – Oct 22 | Air | Cardinal |
| Scorpio | Oct 23 – Nov 21 | Water | Fixed |
| Sagittarius | Nov 22 – Dec 21 | Fire | Mutable |
| Capricorn | Dec 22 – Jan 19 | Earth | Cardinal |
| Aquarius | Jan 20 – Feb 18 | Air | Fixed |
| Pisces | Feb 19 – Mar 20 | Water | Mutable |
Why can two calendars give different dates?
The Sun enters the next 30-degree tropical sign at a specific instant, rather than at midnight everywhere. That instant falls on different local clock times and can fall on different local dates. A calendar that rounds to a date can therefore disagree with an exact calculation without either person’s birthday changing.
What should I do if I was born on a cusp?
Use your full birth date, recorded local time and birthplace. At a given instant, the Sun has one tropical longitude and belongs to one sign. A phrase such as “on the cusp” can describe a boundary birthday; it does not mean the Sun occupies two signs simultaneously.
- Check whether the birth time is recorded or estimated.
- Use the birth city’s historical time zone, including daylight saving where applicable.
- Check the calculated Sun sign before interpreting a match.
Our optional birth-details reading checks the chosen Sun sign against an astronomical calculation and flags a mismatch. It supports over 34,000 searchable places and dates from 1900. You can also use the Sun-sign finder before choosing signs in the calculator.
Is a zodiac sign the same as a constellation?
A tropical sign is an equal segment of a coordinate system; a constellation is a region of the sky. The names overlap, but these are different ways to divide and describe the sky. Our tools use the tropical zodiac consistently and do not silently switch to a sidereal system.
Questions, answered
Can I find my sign without a birth time?
Usually a date gives a useful approximation. Near a boundary, a precise birth time and place may be needed. Avoid choosing a sign solely because a description feels familiar.
Does my Sun sign tell me my Moon or Rising sign?
No. They describe different positions. A Sun-sign date table cannot determine the Moon or the eastern horizon at the moment of birth.
