Fire, earth, air and water signs explained
The four zodiac elements are fire, earth, air and water, with three signs in each group. In Western astrology, these groupings organize symbolic themes such as action, practicality, ideas and emotional experience. They are a reflection framework, not a scientific classification of people.

Which signs belong to each element?
Every Sun sign belongs to one element. The table groups the twelve signs and links to examples of how each element’s themes might show up in an ordinary conversation.

How are elements different from modalities?
Elements group symbolic themes; modalities group styles of responding to change. Cardinal, fixed and mutable are the three modalities. Each element contains one sign of each modality, so sharing an element does not make two signs identical.
- Cardinal: Aries, Cancer, Libra and Capricorn—traditionally linked with starting or initiating.
- Fixed: Taurus, Leo, Scorpio and Aquarius—traditionally linked with sustaining or holding a direction.
- Mutable: Gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces—traditionally linked with adapting or revising.
Do matching elements make a better relationship?
Not by themselves. A shared element may suggest a familiar language within astrology, but a relationship involves two real people with histories, preferences and choices. Read compatibility by element to see how our model uses the groupings without treating them as a verdict.

Questions, answered
Can someone have more than one element in their chart?
Yes. Different chart placements can fall in different signs and therefore different elements. Your Sun sign’s element describes only that one placement.
Is one element more emotional or intelligent than another?
No such ranking is established by these symbolic groupings. They should not be used to make judgments about someone’s abilities, worth or capacity to care.
